Water Trees; Here’s How
Posted on Tuesday July 18, 2017
With the arrival of hotter, drier weather, Mokena residents are being urged to water new trees that may have been planted in parkways around their homes over the past year or so.

Phil Graf of Graf Tree Care, the Village of Mokena’s consulting arborist, suggests that during dry periods, new trees should be watered twice a week by taking a hose and letting it trickle 3-5 feet around the tree for 20 minutes. This will apply water where it is needed most—to the new tree’s root system. Residents should avoid watering the trunk or foliage of the tree.

In the event of significant rainfall, Graf recommends waiting 3 days, then starting the twice a week cycle of watering over again.

In conditions of extreme heat and drought, Graf says you can water every other day. He cautions, however, that no matter what, you should not water your tree every day.
